Hanover Township has a proud tradition of encouraging community involvment in your government.  The Township has many opportunities for you to get involved and give back to the community. use the resources below to find out where and how you can get involved.  From helping our Food Pantry to working the front desk at the Senior Center, the Township can provide you an opportunity to give back.

 

Hanover Township Welfare Services Department:

The Welfare Services Department  has volunteer opportunities available in our food pantry as well as administrative help, special projects and our holiday programs.  Right now we have approximately 25 volunteers in the Welfare Services Department.  In the food pantry our volunteers assist with helping the clients, stocking shelves, keeping bread stocked, checking dates on labels, organizing food on shelves, bagging of bread and sweets, assisting with Mobile Food Pantries and other miscellaneous duties.

Administrative duties include greeting the clients, having clients sign in and checking their food pantry card, making food pantry cards for new clients, having new clients fill out application, entering new clients onto spreadsheet, updating spreadsheet when clients use pantry, assist with mailings, making copies of forms and flyers.  Some of our volunteers are trained for LIHEAP and assist clients with their applications.
 
Our Volunteers assist with our Backpack Giveaway and our holiday programs.  These events are our busiest time of the year.  Our volunteers assist with many miscellaneous duties including filling and distributing backpacks, mailings for our candlelight bowl, wrapping and distributing of toys for our sponsor a family and toy giveaway. 

 

 

Hanover Township Youth and Family Services Department:

At Youth and Family Services, volunteers collaborate with staff and community members and share their unique skills, talents, and experiences with youth and others in the community. We are looking for volunteers in the following areas: Open Gym, fundraising events, EarthTeam, and intergenerational dances for teens and senior citizens.

Open Gym
Open Gym is a 15-year-old program for youth that provides them with recreational, educational, and social activities, homework help, and physical fitness, leadership, and skills-building trainings. We look to our volunteers to teach their unique skills and talents to the youth in the program. During the school year Open Gym is after school until 6:00p.m. Open Gym also takes place during summer, winter, and spring breaks during the day or evening.
 
Fundraising Events
Fundraisers help to support Youth and Family Services programs and services. In April 2010, we held our first successful Rummage Sale to raise funds for the Open Gym Program. We will have another in the fall of 2010. We will need volunteers to help organize, advertise, and run the event. We are also looking for donated items to sell.
 
EarthTeam
EarthTeam is a group of teens who work with community leaders in forest preserves and make natural habitats in Hanover Township. EarthTeam's mission is to create a new generation of environmental leaders by introducing into the classroom and the community environmental experiences that are so active and engaging that they inspire dedication to a healthy environment.
 
Intergenerational Dances
The next dance for teens and senior citizens is Thursday, May 13 from 5:00p.m.-8:00p.m. at Hanover Township Senior Center. Volunteers help plan and run the dances. In the past, dances have featured seniors and teens dancing to a mix of oldies and the latest hits. Throughout the dance prizes are raffled off that are donated by local businesses.
 
 

 

Hanover Township Senior Services Department:

Hanover Township Senior Services has over 300 volunteers who serve both the Township and community organizations. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available. To learn more about volunteering with Hanover Township Senior Services, please follow the information below.

Art Program Volunteers

Hanover Township Senior Services provides a variety of art classes to its Seniors. Volunteers are often needed to help staff coordinate projects and assist in the classroom. Volunteers are trained by class instructors and often help in special events and projects.
 

Gift Shop Volunteers

The Ye Old Gift Shop is located within the Senior Center and is run entirely by volunteers. Volunteers are always needed to staff the gift shop during regular business hours. Specifically looking for someone willing to do a Friday afternoon shift.
 

Lending Closet Volunteer

The lending closet volunteer assists with record keeping, organizations, processing of weekly transactions, follow up phone calls, and maintenance of donated medic al equipment (wheelchairs, canes, walkers, etc) in the lending closet. 

 

“Meals on Wheels” Drivers

Meals on Wheels drivers deliver meals to homebound seniors. The Site Manager divides the delivery area into routes which are generally covered in approximately an hour. Mileage reimbursement is provided on a monthly basis at a rate set by the Township. Drivers must be friendly and enjoy meeting with people. Volunteers must also have a valid Illinois driver’s license, current liability insurance, and valid automobile registration. Must also be willing to submit to a background check. 
 

Positive Action Group

The Social Services department recently started the Positive Action Group out of Seniors desire to do more within the community to address social issues. The group meets monthly to work on various projects. Previous projects have included a trip to Feed My Starving Children as well as Christmas in July Senior project.   The projects change each month and suggestions are always welcome. 
 

P.A.L. (Persons Against Loneliness) Program

A PAL volunteer offers companionship to Hanover Township seniors who might not have a support system, such as family, friends or care givers. PAL companions connect with their senior two times a month via phone or in person (at Senior Center, in the community, or at senior’s home). PAL companions must be willing to establish a rapport with individual senior and offer companionship, conversations, encouragement and emotional support. Training is provided by Senior Center staff member. Volunteers are also needed for our Bi-Lingual PAL program which focuses on meeting with seniors who speak limited English. 
 

Volunteer Express Drivers

Become more involved in your community and promote the independence of older residents! Drive seniors who would otherwise be unable to attend their appointments. Mileage is reimbursed. Drivers must be friendly and enjoy meeting new people. Volunteers must be 21 years old, have a valid Illinois driver’s license, current liability insurance, and valid automobile registration. Volunteers must also be willing to submit to a background and driving history check.
